How is treating children different from adults?

• Children’s bones have growth plates that are responsible for the development and growth of bones. If these growth plates are injured, the injured limb may be underdeveloped, shorter/ smaller, or even deformed.
• Children’s bones are very elastic, they can be bent without being broken (plastic deformation) or bent and broken at the same time (green-stick fracture).
• Children’s bones are not fully calcified yet, and cannot be fully seen on X-rays machines until about 12 years old. Therefore, diagnosing a fracture relies mainly on the experience of orthopedic surgeons and advanced imaging techniques.
• Children’s bones are much smaller, hence, conventional plates/ screws/ nails for adults are too big for them. Specialized pediatric implants such as Titanium Elastic Nails (TENs) are required.
